In my 2nd year Mechanical Engineering Design course, before making digital drawings of sample parts, we learned the basics by hand (i.e., creating a BOM and assigning different parts with balloons; representing top, front, and section views with all necessary parameters labeled; providing the units, scale, and sheet number used in the title blocks; etc.)
